What Is PSA Nitrogen Generation?

Published 2026-07-18 · Blog

PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) nitrogen generation is the most widely used technology for on-site nitrogen production. It's reliable, cost-effective, and scalable from small workshops to large industrial facilities. This beginner's guide explains how it works, what components make up a PSA system, and how to choose the right one.

How PSA Nitrogen Generation Works

PSA technology separates nitrogen from compressed air using Carbon Molecular Sieve (CMS). The process works in a simple cycle:

  1. Compression: An air compressor delivers compressed air at 7–10 bar to the PSA system.
  2. Adsorption: Compressed air enters Tower A. Oxygen molecules are smaller than nitrogen and are trapped by the CMS pores. Nitrogen passes through as product gas.
  3. Regeneration: When Tower A is saturated, the airflow switches to Tower B. Tower A depressurizes and releases the trapped oxygen to the atmosphere.
  4. Continuous output: Towers alternate every 60–120 seconds, providing a continuous stream of nitrogen.

Advantages of PSA Nitrogen Generation

  • Cost savings: Reduce gas costs by 60–85% compared to bottled or liquid nitrogen
  • Energy efficient: Only 0.35–0.55 kWh per Nm³ of nitrogen produced
  • Reliable: Continuous supply, no delivery dependencies
  • Compact: Small footprint — a 30 Nm³/h unit fits within 2m²
  • Low maintenance: Annual maintenance kit is the primary recurring cost
  • Safe: Low pressure, no cryogenic hazards, no chemical handling

Is PSA Right for You?

A PSA nitrogen generator is a good fit if:

  • Your nitrogen consumption is 1 Nm³/h or more
  • You need 95–99.999% purity
  • You have access to a reliable compressed air supply
  • You want to reduce your gas costs by 60% or more
