Nitrogen Inerting for Battery Dry Rooms

How nitrogen maintains ultra-low humidity (-70C dew point) in lithium battery manufacturing to prevent moisture reactions and cell defects.

Why Moisture Is the Enemy of Lithium Batteries

Lithium reacts explosively with water. In battery manufacturing, even 1% relative humidity can cause:

  • SEI (solid electrolyte interphase) degradation — reducing capacity and cycle life
  • Electrolyte decomposition — generating HF acid that corrodes electrodes
  • Cell swelling and thermal runaway risk

To prevent this, battery production lines operate inside dry rooms maintained at -60C to -70C dew point. Nitrogen is continuously circulated through the room to displace ambient moisture and maintain ultra-low humidity.

ParameterStandard CellHigh-Performance/EV Cell
Dew Point-40C to -50C-60C to -70C

Critical note: Monsoon seasons in SE Asian manufacturing hubs (Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia) cause ambient humidity >90%. Standard membrane N2 systems struggle to maintain dew point during these periods — PSA + purifier combos provide the necessary stability.
